Friday Five

Happy Friday everybody!  It’s time for another round of the Friday Five – here are the five things that caught my eye this week.

1. Elle of Switcheroom designed this apartment from the ground up for a newlywed couple in the Philippines.  I couldn’t believe how much functionality and privacy she fit into this tiny studio!

2. The Design*Sponge gift guides are a major source of Christmas inspiration for me every year, and this year I know my favorite guide will be the Best of Handmade Gifts.

3. I was introduced to two pretty new-to-me blogs this week.  First up, designer Kristen Krasen shares personal and professional room designs and inspiration on her blog, 6th Street Design School.  This photo from her living room tour shows her amazing eye for pattern and color!

(via Little Green Notebook)

4. Also this week, I had fun exploring the posts over at The Impatient Gardner.  Erin and her husband have turned an old cottage into a beautiful home with tons of style – something we’d like to do with a historic place one day!

(via House of Turquoise)

5. Last but not least, The Hunger Games trilogy is a recommended read everywhere I look these days (it’s on lots of bloggers’ favorite things lists), so with some help from my hubby, I found a site where we can “check out” books on our Kindle for free.  The site’s called Lendle, and the books are incredible.  I checked out the trilogy on Wednesday and am already halfway through the second book!

Needless to say, I’ll probably be spending some time finishing the series this weekend and then suffering my typical reading withdrawal when I can’t find a suitable replacement.  Have you read The Hunger Games?  Any recommended blogs or books that should make the Friday Five next week?

Thanks for reading!

Dinner and a Dessert

I was looking for a way to use up the rest of our turkey from Thanksgiving on Tuesday and had an unbelievably hard time finding a turkey casserole recipe without weird ingredients in it.  So instead of following a recipe I just made up this casserole as I went. The best part about this recipe is that it will work with leftover turkey or pre-cooked chicken or even extra veggies for a vegetarian option.

Casserole

Leftover Turkey Casserole

1 1/2 cups rice
1-2 cups cubed turkey
1 broccoli floret
2 stalks of celery
1/2 cup chopped carrots
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup milk
salt and pepper

Cook rice according to package instructions.  Chop broccoli, celery, and carrots. A few minutes before the rice is done, steam the veggies for about 5 minutes.  Mix rice, veggies, turkey, 3/4 cup cheddar, cream of mushroom soup, and milk in 9×13 casserole dish.  Salt and pepper to taste.

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.  A few minutes before your timer goes off, sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top.  Serves 5-6.

For dessert, you’ve got to try this skillet cookie recipe I found via Kim at NewlyWoodwards.  It was so easy to make, only dirtied one dish, and smelled so good I had to try it before I remembered to take a picture!

The original recipe can be found via the link above.  You’ll either thank me or hate me (depending on your holiday diet plan!)  Enjoy the recipes and come back tomorrow for another edition of the Friday Five!

Christmas Tree in Peacock Hues

It happens every year.  I always show y’all our “finished Christmas tree” and then less than two days (or even hours) later I decide it needs a little tweaking.  In 2009, we called our tree “done” and then proceeded to change out our red living room curtains for gold ones and add a big bow to the top of our tree.  Last year, we added a whole roll of ribbon and some swirly branches to the top after I did the big reveal.

This year, I’m just going to embrace the fact that we will more than likely be changing our tree up at least once before the big 12-25 hits, but it’s lookin’ good so far.

Tree Centered

Fireplace Wall

Just like our Christmas mantel, the color scheme for our tree this year is much cooler than in years past.  No reds this year!

Here’s a 2009, 2010, and 2011 Christmas tree side-by-side for fun:

Tree 2009 BTree 2010 BTree 2011 B

The biggest addition to the tree this year were the dark teal and brown ornaments I found on clearance at Hobby Lobby after Christmas last year.   I only found about 6-7 teal bulbs that weren’t broken (they’re real glass), but I made sure to spread them out over the side of the tree that we see.

Left Side Tree Blue Ornament

Are you a “front of the tree” decorator too?  I’m ashamed to admit that the back of our tree has probably 1/3 as many ornaments on it as the front!  But who’s going to see the back anyway?  Our cat?

Here’s a wider view so you can see the mantel and the tree together.  Those leafy curtains from Ikea really helped set the color scheme for Christmas this year.  It was pure luck that I decided to grab teal and brown ornaments last year and they match the curtains so well!

Tree Wide

Blue Ornament Close Up Brown Ornaments

Instead of placing the curly twigs (their proper name is ting ting) at just the top of the tree like last year, I shoved them in all around the tree.  They make the tree feel full and whimsical without ribbon.  I used the gold twigs I painted last year and the leftover brown ones too.

Gold Ting Ting

This is only the third year we’ve had our full-size tree.  We picked it up right after Christmas in 2008 for 50% off at Walmart, and it’s still going strong.

If you’re just starting to accumulate seasonal decor like we are and you don’t want to spend a ton of money, my best recommendation is to go ornament shopping after Christmas.  It takes a little planning if you’re wanting to change up your color scheme for the next year, but you can usually walk away with ornaments for 75% off or more.  Hobby Lobby is the best I’ve found for after Christmas sales.  I think nearly all of our ornaments were purchased for 80-90% off!

So there you have it, our “I’m not calling it done yet” Christmas tree!

Our Blue, Green and Gold Christmas Mantel

Good morning everybody!  Today I’m excited to share the quick changes we made to our mantel to make it a little more festive for the Christmas season.

Fireplace Christmas

We kept a lot of the daily mantel decor and spiced it up with little gold Charlie Brown trees, some ornaments, and a couple of reindeer.

Christmas Mantel

I made the blue and brown wreath last Christmas (see the how-to here), but instead of garland and twinkle lights, we opted to keep our blue and green glass on the mantel this year.

Mantel 2010 Mantel 2011

We apparently have way more gold ornaments than any other color, so after we were done decorating the tree (pictures to come) a few sparkly gold globes found their way to the top of our glass vases.

Mantel Close Up

Mantel from Left

I picked up the gold trees a couple of years ago at an after Christmas sale at Hobby Lobby.  They were marked way down to 99 cents each!

Ornaments    Bottle Brush Trees

The little pair of reindeer is from Target. I found them a couple of years ago and they make an appearance every year around this time.

Mantel with Wreath

Overall it was a quick and easy update.  It seems like every year the colors we use in our Christmas decor have gotten lighter and lighter, and I’m totally embracing blues and greens this year!

How about you?  Do you decorate for Christmas in traditional colors or are you going with a different scheme this year?

Thanksgiving 2011 and a Christmas Preview!

Happy Monday everybody!  I hope you all had wonderful Thanksgiving, a safe Black Friday (if you braved the crowds), and a great weekend, no matter where in the world you live!

This was our first year to host Thanksgiving at our house, and my husband did an amazing job with the cooking!  He popped the turkey breast in the oven after the Packer game on Thursday and everything was hot and ready to eat about 2 hours later.  We’re so lucky he loves to cook!

Cooking Table to Kitchen

We kept the table simple since we knew it would be filled with food, but I was happy to get to use our red cloth napkins.

This year, our party was small – just my mom, brother, Stephen and I – but we had fun and were happy to be together.

Did I mention how great the food was?  🙂  I’m already mourning the last of the leftovers…

To top it all off, after dinner, Stephen and my brother pulled down all our Christmas decorations from the attic.  My mom and I got to work setting up the tree, with a little help from our kitty Tina.

The decorations are out and the lights are lit.  It’s safe to say…

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here at Heardmont.  We’ll be sharing our Christmas decorations with you bit by bit this week, so come back soon!

Friday Five

Better late than never, we’re back from our tryptophan comas in time to share five favorite posts from this week.

1. Kyle Knight of Knight Moves shared her favorite Bar Essentials for the holiday season. I think we may need to take some notes and stock up our bar cart (and then buy a book on how to mix cocktails) in time for Christmas!

2. This retro 1960s home featured on design attractor hit all the right notes for me.  I love that wall of unique mirrors behind the bed, especially.

3. Another great retro renovation was featured on raenovate this week.  Click on over to see the amazing exterior transformation, too!

4. In case you’re considering a new kitchen backsplash (like we are), you might want to peruse design*sponge’s best of backsplashes post.  These green tiles were one some of my favorites.

5. Last up, check out this gorgeous master bedroom by Design OCD.  I love everything – from the wall color to the beautiful wooden bed to the white board and batten, woven lampshades, and fresh linens.  The before picture (via Better After) will really make you appreciate this makeover!

With that, we’re signing off for another weekend.  If you’re in the U.S., we hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving – and no matter where you are, we’re thankful to you for reading!  See you Monday!

Christmas Crafts

I’ve been tinkering around with some new crafting toys of late, and it looks like many of the gifts we give this year will be handmade by yours truly.  Here’s a little preview of what we’ve been working on – I hate to be cryptic, but I can’t completely spill the beans until after these gifts have been given!

Crafty Christmas

1. I’m all stocked up on soy wax.
2. Wax, wicks, and scented oils.  Bet you can’t guess what I’m making!
3. Did you know these metal letter stamping kits are only $12 at Hobby Lobby?
4. These colorful Indian-looking bowls were only $4 for the set – I love them!
5. I think I’ve finally gotten the hang of my stamping kit.  No metal is safe from me!
6. Melted wax and food coloring does not colored wax make.  That tip’s for you, Cassie!

I keep running across tons of great DIY gift ideas (especially on Pinterest), but I think I’ll run out of time before I can try them all!  Are you making any gifts yourself this year?

P.S. We’ll be taking the next two days off to celebrate Thanksgiving with our family, but check back Friday for another edition of the Friday Five!  Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

The Lights of the Ozarks

Having lived in Fayetteville now for eight years, we can safely say that visiting The Lights of the Ozarks on the downtown square is a huge sign that the Christmas season has begun. Every year, the trees and landscaping all around the square are strung with thousands of Christmas lights in time for the holidays.  Vendors sell hot chocolate and pony rides and people of all ages come to see the magic.

Lights

On Saturday afternoon, Stephen and I went out to watch the Razorback football game with friends; afterwards, we all headed down to the square to check out the awesome display of lights.

We snagged a funnel cake and watched as they closed up shop at the pony tent.  I thought it was cute that they had pony rides for kids and horse-drawn carriage rides around the square for the grown-ups.

It’s overwhelming to think about how much time and work went into hanging all those individual strands of lights.  This red tree was my favorite!

This red Razorback is there every year, and I always snap a photo for old times’ sake.

Just for fun, here are a few photos of our visits to The Lights in years past.

And again in 2006 – a shot of me and my 3 awesome roommates. This one was a framer for sure!

Does your town go all out with Christmas lights this time of year?  Are there any special traditions that signal the start of the holiday season for you?

Friday Five

This was a week for fabulous furniture makeovers – everything on my Friday Five list today is a piece of furniture!  What can I say, I’m addicted to a great before and after. 🙂

1. I loved this chair makeover by Katie of matsutake, featured this week on Design*Sponge.  The colors and pattern of the fabric (originally a Mexican dress) are so fun!

2. The shimmery herringbone detail on this desk from Ann Marie at Twice Lovely literally made my jaw drop. This pattern is right up there with a tufted headboard (from last week) on my gotta-try-it list!

3. Lovers of all things funky and mod will appreciate the bright makeover Tricia gave these tulip chairs.  Check out the details on her blog Zoom In.

4. If classic is more your style, then you’ll love the vintage drafting stool makeover at The Sunset Lane.  My favorite part?  Kari painted that Burberry design herself, inspired by a nail polish design she saw on Pinterest!

5. Last but not least, it’s another makeover from my girl Cassie!  How could I resist Cassie’s recent bookshelf redo, especially when she did such a great job filling and personalizing the shelves?  More details (and a gorgeous living room in the works) at Primitive & Proper.

I hope one or more of these projects has inspired you to pick up a paintbrush or update a favorite piece of furniture this weekend. Imagine how nice it would be to revive a tired old piece just in time for your holiday visitors!

What projects have inspired you lately?

Guest Post: Creating Stylish Holiday Topiaries

Morning everybody!  This week has been a crazy one around these parts, which might explain why I woke up this morning and realized We Are Hosting Thanksgiving At Our House One Week From Today!  Yikes.

Lucky for me, I have a husband who loves to cook, so while Stephen plans out the food (he bought the turkey yesterday) I’m focusing on the decor.  Today I wanted to share a guest post from Sarah of Tree Classics.  Although it’s a post about Christmas topiaries, I think all these examples could be used as table centerpieces for Thanksgiving, too!

Take it away, Sarah!

~~~
How to Create Stylish Christmas Topiaries
Topiaries are a great way to extend the Christmas theme throughout your home. With a little creativity (and a lot of patience), topiaries embody the spirit of the holidays. For a stylish Christmas this year, here are a few ideas that you can try:
Pinecone Harvest
Inspired by HGTV.com, this topiary uses pinecones, artificial berries and old branches from broken Christmas trees.
Pinecone-Tree
Photo from www.countryliving.com
Materials:
  • decorative bowl or platter
  • craft foam blocks
  • foam topiary cone
  • hot glue and 2 packs of glue sticks
  • 12 branches from old or broken artificial Christmas trees
  • pinecones (enough to fill the surrounding foam cone)
  • a bunch of berries
  • artificial moss
Procedure:
  1. Fill the decorative container with craft foam and then begin staking branches into the foam. This hides the interior of the container and adds a nature-inspired theme to the whole piece.
  2. Working in small sections, use hot glue to apply a thin layer of the artificial moss to the cone. Starting from the bottom, hot-glue the individual pinecones, keeping them as close as possible to hide the middle of the tree. As pinecones have varying shapes, you can use more moss to hide the topiary’s middle section. Add the berries for finishing touches.
  3. Once the cone is covered, gently place the tree in the center of the container. The weight of the tree will keep the arrangement sturdy.
To create a pinecone mini forest in your foyer, make several topiaries in varying heights. You can also use poinsettias instead of pinecones and leave out the moss.
A Pot of Gold
A unique spin on vintage topiaries of foam balls and gold, this is one eye-catching piece with its shimmering elegance.
Gold Topiary
Photo from www.thisnext.com
Materials:
  • A ceramic pot
  • Foam core (preferably twice as big as the pot)
  • Brown moss or burlap
  • Styrofoam or floral foam
  • A long, straight twig (be sure it’s not brittle as it serves as the topiary “stand”)
  • Small ornaments painted in gold like berries and ribbons
  • Gold paint
Procedure:
  1. Paint the pot in gold.
  2. Cut the foam into a shape that fits snugly into the pot to serve as foundation for the stand.
  3. Drive the twig into the center of the foam core, as securely as you can, going about halfway through.
  4. Surround the core with small golden ornaments.
You can also use different color themes. Gold and brown makes for an earthy color scheme, but you can go modern with silver and blue.
Snow White
The gorgeous white blooms of a rose never go out of style. This one is inspired by flowersandchocos.com.
White Rose
Photo from www.flowersandchocos.com
Materials:
  • foam topiary cone
  • white vase or pot
  • roses (or other flowers, just make sure they have a wide base so they can cover the foam cone)
  • hot glue and 2 packs of glue sticks
  • small silver/gold beads
  • gold/silver ribbon
  • wooden dowel rod
Procedure:
  1. Fill the pot or vase with craft foam. Using a wooden dowel rod, poke the cone all the way through.
  2. Glue the roses around the cone. Place gold or silver beads in the center of some flowers for a gleaming touch.
  3. Wrap the pot with gold or silver ribbons.
You may use other flowers; just make sure that the base is wide enough. Personally, I love paperwhites and poppies.
Be it the porch, patio or foyer, topiaries are the perfect accents to entryways. Greet your holiday guests in style this year!
