A Home Decor Where’s Waldo

Home Decor, master bedroom

How many of you have seen the new Sex and the City movie?  My gals and I finally got to see it Monday night, and I have to say I was disappointed.  Anything but stellar acting, a very shallow story line, and puns worse than Pam from The Office’s original hair style left me feeling like I’d wasted my money.

However, the one redeeming factor of the film (aside from the fact that it only cost $4 on weeknights – woot!) was the fashion – both the clothing and the interior decorating.  Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte wore some pretty wild outfits and got to chill in some FABULOUS spaces, but my absolute favorite room in the whole movie was Carrie and Big’s entry at their new apartment.  Can you guess why?

(Carrie stands in her entryway)

Yup, you guessed it!  I have the same mirror hanging above my bed that Carrie and Big had in their over the top, lavishly decorated NYC pad.  I guess you could say, I’m on the cutting edge of interior decorating.  Just call me trend-settah! ;)

Thrifty Tuesday: A Newfound Love

Home Decor, Thrifty Deals

I have a newfound thrifting love.  I’m currently obsessed with the beautiful Reader’s Digest books from the 1970s and 80s.  The more of them I see, the more I appreciate the vibrant colors and the gorgeous retro-modern patterns used in their designs!

Don’t know what I’m talking about?  You may remember me mentioning this one I found for $1 a few weeks ago.

Ever since I found this little number, I’ve been seeing the cover pattern pop up all over the design world.  One of the most popular items I’ve seen with similar designs?  Modern-day wallpaper.

Here are a couple of examples.  Tone-on-tone:

It’s amazing how these patterns are truly making a comeback.  Patterns on book bindings are still popular as well.  Take the new Penguin Classics everyone in blogland was lusting after when they made their debut.

One of the biggest draws to these books has to be their colorful covers, not to mention the writing they contain!  I must have had these in the back of my mind when I found my little RD version a few weeks ago, because now I’ve taken to looking for these little treasures everywhere I go.

Ever on the lookout, last weekend I hit the jackpot!  One store we went into had probably 40 of these babies on clearance, so I picked my favorite 8 and rang them up. =)

Here are 3 of them, chillin’ in the nook of our china cabinet with some azalea clippings from the backyard.

And here are the other 5.  Still had the tags on them when I took these pictures, I was so excited to show them off!

The best part about these books was the price.  I know they’re marked $1 each, but these were actually on the Bargain Shelf for 75% off – that’s $0.25 each!  So, for 2 bucks, I came home with 8 super-fly vintage books, perfect for adding some color and pattern to many a neglected corner.

Lesson learned?  Take a minute next time you find yourself digging through “dated junk.”  You may just be surprised to find a fun, colorful diamond in the rough!

For Fun, For Sale

Oh my goodness!  I just came across earringsnation’s Etsy shop, and just look at the cute necklace they have for sale:

They actually have several cute vintage pieces, but you all know I’ve got a thing for Hooters owls. :)

That is all.

The Accidental Collector

A couple of weeks ago, Stephen and I were poking around a local antique store and I spotted this print.

I immediately LOVED it and thought it looked familiar.  It was a little pricey so we didn’t take it home, but I remembered it and mentioned it to my mom a few days later.  Believe it or not, she knew exactly which print I was talking about.  Not only that, but she said she had it and three others in the series stored at her house!

She said she’d let me have the prints, so this weekend she brought out the four prints and started telling me more about them.

Apparently these prints were part of Northern Tissue (now Quilted Northern)’s ad campaign in the 50s and 60s.  My grandma and her sister collected the prints for their daughters’ rooms.  The baby was supposed to be my mom, the snow girl my aunt Kathy, the blonde my mom’s cousin Rozanne, and the redhead my mom’s cousin Peggy.

She also mentioned that she knew there were at least two little boys in the series as well, so a quick Google search when I got home pulled up this:

There weren’t just four prints, or even six, but 12 in the series!

Of course I sent mom an email with the 12 prints right away and then starting clicking along to find out as much as I could about the series.  Turns out these prints were illustrations done by Frances Hook for Northern Tissue starting in 1958.  The nine girls were the “American Beauties” and the 3 boys were aptly called the “American Boys.”

Prints going on eBay and Etsy were moderately priced, depending on the quality and sentimentality to the seller, I’m sure.  You won’t believe my luck, though, when checking out prices on Etsy.  These seven prints were for sale for…

… $12.50 for the set!  Can you believe it?!  Even better, I didn’t have any of these yet!

Now you know why I’m the “accidental collector.”  In less than 12 hours, I was the proud owner of 11 of the 12 prints in this series.

Here’s the only one left to nab:

I’ve found this print for sale by itself a few places so far, but generally goes for around $25.  After getting such a deal on the seven from Etsy, I may just have to be patient for this little girl.  She is adorable, though, isn’t she?  =)

Now the question is what to do with them all!  I do have a big blank wall in my nearly completed craft room… maybe these will be just the ticket.

One thing I do know is that I’d love to carry on the tradition and give these to my kids someday.  What a great story they’ll make!  Did I leave anything out, mom?

Master Bedroom Redo: Hanging the Mirror

Before and After, Home Decor

You might not guess it, but it took more than a nail and a hook to hang that vintage mirror you saw above our bed in our master bedroom reveal.

When we bought this mirror, the backing looked like this:

We originally thought we’d leave the mirror intact and just add another wire across the back so we could hang it horizontally, but decades of grime and dust on this vintage piece forced us to take it apart for a good cleaning.

We were so relieved that we took the mirror apart when we discovered that only half of the screws holding the frame and glass together were still holding tight!  Imagine if a few more screws had come loose in the middle of the night and 50 pounds of mirror had landed on our heads!

There’s the inside of the frame.  Can you see where the little pegs broke off inside the frame?  Both of the pegs you see here were broken.

Here’s the back we took off of the mirror.  You can see pieces of the plastic pegs still attached to the backing board.

Needless to say, we couldn’t just put the mirror back together and hang it up.  No no.  This was going to take some clever engineering.

One trip to Lowe’s later, and we came home with this:

Loctite 1 minute Epoxy
5 mirror hanging hooks (we only used 3)
1 package adhesive velcro tabs
1 2-in-1 NoStud 200lb art hanger
1 package 75 lb test mirror cord

While we were out, Tina admired her reflection:

(Insert “You’re so Vain” lyrics here…)

Starting with the bare mirror, our first step was to arrange the mirror hangers around the edge of the glass in such a way that they would support the mirror as it hung.  We settled on two hooks at the bottom – for strength and balance – and one hook on the top – to keep the mirror snug against the wall.  Then we connected the hooks with the mirror hanging wire.

The next step was to glue the mirror hooks down with the epoxy.  (Side note, if you use this epoxy, PLEASE do it in a ventilated area!  We had to practically leave the house for the rest of the day just to get the scent of this stuff out of our noses.)

You might notice in the above picture that we found a faint stamp on the back of the mirror after we’d detached it from the frame.  Here’s a closer look:

Guess now we know exactly what year our vintage find was made!  If you can’t make it out, the stamp reads “BASSETT AUG. 2 1971″

Moving on, after the glue dried, our mirror was ready to hang.

Here’s a look at the mirror hanger we used:

The neat thing about this hanger is that it can be used with or without a stud in the wall, so you have total freedom to hang items wherever you want.  Of course there wasn’t a stud exactly above the center of our headboard, so we went with the non-stud option (using different nail-holes in the hanger than if we’d found a stud).  We nailed up the hanger…

and then the mirror went up!

When the mirror was hung, we noticed that while the bottom of the mirror touched the wall, the top was pulling away from the wall by an inch or two.

Leaving the mirror like this would have been fine, but we both wanted to make the mirror as level and symmetrical from all angles as possible, so Stephen rooted around in the garage and found a little square of foam that was just the right thickness…

A little bit of tape on the back, and this baby was ready to get stuck to the back of the mirror to push the bottom of the mirror out from the wall.

Here’s a side shot of the mirror after we stuck the foam behind it.  Can you see the hook at the top and the foam at the bottom?

The next step was to attach the frame.  We were lucky the frame was a made of a light weight plastic/ resin because our solution to the broken screws on the back of the frame was to attach the frame directly to the mirror with velcro.

This is the part where we tell you we should have gotten black velcro instead of white.  You see, the inside of the frame was painted dark brown.  I didn’t think the color of the velcro would matter, but when we stuck a little strip of velcro on the glass of the mirror and it’s complementing strip on the inside of the frame, the mirror reflected the white velcro all over the place!

What to do, what to do?  Color it black with permanent marker, of course!  (No pic of that, folks.  Sorry!)

After a stupid velcro / finger cutting incident, we matched up the velcro strips on the frame and the mirror and ended up with this:

What do you think?  Are you as confident as we are that it’ll hold and not crash down on us in the middle of the night?

I was actually pleasantly surprised at how much I like the dimension we added with that little piece of foam propping up the bottom of the mirror.  Not to mention the dimension any mirror adds to a room.  Yep, we’re pretty happy with how that one turned out.  Craigslist saves the day yet again =)

Master Bedroom Redo: Bedding and a mustard chair

Before and After, Home Decor

After bringing the bare bones of our bedroom up to speed, it was time for the decorative touches.  Of course, the first logical place to start accessorizing was with the bedding.  We’d had cream walls and bedding for long enough that when I saw this lovely little blue and white number I practically ran home with it to finally see some color in our room!

Then, when I found that sweet little mustard yellow chair off of Craigslist, I knew I had to find a way to make the two work together.

The solution?  Blue bedding with yellow accents (stay tuned for the yellow pillow I made) and other yellow items throughout the room.

After we’d selected the bedding, we were ready to bring in the yellow chair, but not before cleaning it up a bit.

Remember how I didn’t know whether or not I should recover the chair?  As it turns out, all it needed was a bit of a cleaning and now it’s almost as good as new!  Our secret stain remover for carpet and upholstery is this little guy:

All I had to do was spray on the foam and scrub away using the scrub brush attached to the can, and all the dinginess was gone.

Our little retro chair found a home across from our bed, with another craigslist find – this cute little stool – acting as a side table.

We still have lots to show you so check back soon.

(Psst!  Did you miss our other master bedroom posts?  Check out the intro here and how we updated the bones of the room here.)

Home Decor, What a Steal

Lookie lookie lookie!

Stephen and I spotted an ad on craigslist yesterday for a vintage furniture sale.  Look what lovelies we brought home!

Awesome mirror.  Reminds me of the witch’s mirror in Snow White!  This one may end up above our bed…

Crazy cool yellow chair.  It’s from the 30s or 40s – can you believe it’s that old?  This could either be my first real upholstering experience or my first time paying for upholstering!  Am I brave enough???

Yay Craigslist!

Blue Suede Shoes

Home Decor, What a Steal

No, it’s not the title of my favorite song or a fun new accessory purchase, it’s the name of a 32,000 square foot antique mall in Stephen’s home town that’s become one of our favorite places for digging up good deals.  The Heards headed to Little Rock two weekends ago to visit the family and have the last of my 2009 birthday celebrations and made a stop over at Blue Suede while we were there.

Right off the bat, we knew this antique store would be chock full of interesting finds.  The entire store is comprised of hundreds of booths, all maintained and stocked by different individuals with different tastes in antiques (or junk, in some cases).  Most of the booth owners tried to maintain a theme with their booth and display items from one or two decades, so it made finding items of your taste much easier than an “antiques en mass” type of store.  Add to that some great sales, and it made for a fun way to spend a Sunday morning.

I cannot stress the variety of items at this place enough.  Where else can you find vintage circus costumes…

Circus

…JFK bookends…

JFK

…and an authentic train seat from an ancient passenger train all under one roof?!

Train_Seat

They even had a HUGE setup of a miniature circus in the middle of it all.

Mini_Circus

Stephen got a kick out of browsing the shelves of hundreds of unique books and stacks of vinyl records…

Vintage_Vinyl

…while I checked out some of my favorite booths, the retro ones!

Retro_Room_1

Retro_Room_2

I must say, my recent retro desk flip has given me a new appreciation for many of these vintage finds.  One piece that caught my eye was this not-quite-endtable, not-quite-dresser, perfect-for-storage chest.  Doesn’t it just beg to make its way to my craft room to chill with my vintage desk?

Lovely_Dresser

Sadly, this little guy didn’t fit the budget or in our overstuffed vehicle (dog + mountain bike + leftover crab legs = no room for little dresser), and neither did his big brother.

Big_Dresser

Loved that $30 chrome desk lamp, by the way!  Didn’t love the fire hazard that might accompany 40 year old wiring.

A few other items we found that had potential included this pair of chairs.

Chairs_To_Paint

They may not look like much, but at $50 for the set, you could definitely turn them into showstoppers with some spray paint and fun fabric like this gal did.

These antique fans (refurbished with new wiring, of course) would be cute alternatives to the traditional ceiling fan and would free up a ceiling for a much more interesting light fixture.

Antique_Fans

Finally this serious sofa, while not my taste, would have some ladies fainting in the aisles with a little TLC.  I’m picturing painted white woodwork with light blue, yellow, or even pink upholstery in a romantic, airy room.

Serious_Sofa

So what did we snag at The King of antique malls, you ask?  For a mere $6, we bought this super cute vinegar and oil set which matches our other white vases and accessories oh so well.

V_and_O

Even a car full of dog and mountain bike can make room for that!

Lesson of the day, if you ever make it to the Little Rock area, check out Blue Suede Shoes antique mall … and won’t you please take me with you?

Flip This: Craft Room Desk

Before and After

Boy, oh boy, am I excited to share my latest project!  This past weekend my mom and grandparents made the trek to Fayetteville for a visit and to bring my old-school metal desk in grandpa’s SUV. I had big plans for this dated desk and its companion chair and was just itching to get my hands on it.  Here’s a shot of what I mean by dated…

Desk_Before

I never thought I’d want that desk-chair pair back when I left it at home after high school, but after pondering the wonders of spray paint, I figured they deserved a second chance.  My project this weekend, then, was to tackle the desk first and see what I could make of it.

Before_Desk_Only

I love the combination of white and wood in furniture, so I figured high gloss white Rustoleum would do the trick for the base of the desk and I’d leave the top natural.  First step was to tape paper over the desk top and rough up the metal with sandpaper.

Sanded_Covered

I did all the spray painting outside on a tarp and made sure to take off the drawer handles so only what I wanted white ended up white!  Here’s a shot of how the desk and drawers looked after 3 coats of paint – that’s 2 cans of Rustoleum and some very sore index fingers.

Desk_Sprayed

After letting it dry overnight, I re-attached the handles and took the paper off the desk top and ended up with something a little bit like this!

Desk_After

I couldn’t be happier with how the desk turned out.  Best of all, it’s long enough to spread out all kinds of craftiness on top and shallow enough not to crowd out the guest bed.  This is where the crafty magic happens, people!

Desk_After_Magic

The best part of this whole “flip” was the price.  One free desk + two $3 cans of Rustoleum + one $2 pack of screws to replace the ones I lost = A whole new desk for about $10!

Thanks so much to grandma, grandpa, and mom for coming to visit and helping me get the craft room on its way!  Stay tuned for my upcoming desk chair flip, including a re-upholstering tutorial…
