Let there be (Chic) Light

In the spirit of spring goal #2 (Did you miss our 3 spring goals? Check them out here) I took on a little lamp re-do project this weekend.  Instead of replacing our orange glass living room lamps, I decided all they needed was a little color switch.

Here is one of the lamps beforehand.  It was in great condition and I liked the style, but that orange just wasn’t working.

Here’s a refresher picture of the color scheme we’re going for in the living room.  Blues and greens with hints of purple in the pillows and curtains.  No orange here!

All it took to update our lamps was 2 cans of spray paint – a white primer to cover the orange and a fun funky teal to add some pizzaz.

I removed the shades and carefully taped over the silver accents on each lamp and then sprayed away.  The little round finials that held on the shades got a coat of blue too.

After a few hours of drying time, this is what we ended up with!

What do you think of my $8 makeover?  Do you like the blue better?

I’m still planning on toning down the shades a bit with fabric and I still need to show you all the whole living room (It’s coming together nicely!), but that’s a post for another day.  Have a good night everybody!

I LOVE the teal. Much better. I have similar glass lamps and want to make them over so bad. I just have to convince the hubby.

Are you kidding me? These are fabulous, and I SO wish they were mine! I even know exactly where I’d put them. ;) Great job!

Love the teal! They remind me of ones I saw on the Target website that I really liked. Hmmm…maybe I need to go to the thrift shop and look for lamps to make-over.

I love your room and all that you did to it. You guys are too cute.
    I’ll be checking back!

    Thanks,
    Laura

Love the green glass pieces on the mantle! We had those when I was growing up and my sister and I always pretended the ones with the toppers had genies living in them. It’s a cool collection.

I love your lamps and want to paint mine –what spray paint did you use?–did you prime first?

    thanks

      Hi Maggie!
Thanks for the question on our spray painted lamps. I did use a spray primer first (by Valspar) and then painted them with glossy aqua spray paint (also by Valspar). Since I primed I didn’t worry too much about the top coat of spray paint being specifically for glass or not, but they do make specific paints for specific materials (metal, plastic, glass, etc). If you are looking for the most durable finish, I’d go with the can that is specific to the material on your lamp base.
Hope that helps! Good luck with your lamps. :)
